Preparing For Your Visit
We can’t wait to see you!
Follow these simple steps to prepare for your visit.
-
Try to limit heavy/strenuous activity beforehand.
It’s best not come in dehydrated nor overly saturated as water weight could affect the readings.
Ideally, do not to eat a big meal two hours prior to your scan.
You will be asked to empty your pockets and remove any significant amounts of metal (watch, belt, glasses, jewelry, etc). Small buttons, zippers, jewelry that cannot be removed are fine. Wear workout clothes if practical.
If applicable, do not have calcium, gastrointestinal contrast, barium or other contrast medium, or radionuclides within 48 hours of your appointment.
-
For optimal results, refrain from eating 2-3 hours before your visit (drink water). Large meals or stimulants / caffeine may cause elevated test readings so we recommend avoiding this if possible.
Limit your activity beforehand (no heavy exercise) so your heart-rate and body is in a rested state.
Refrain from caffeine or stimulants the day of your test and avoid alcohol for ~12 hours. Although not mandatory, this ensures the best and most accurate readings.
Workout, casual, or even business clothes are all acceptable, as you will be relaxing in a chair.

Try to limit your activity before your visit for best results.
Refrain from taking any caffeine or stimulants the day of your test.
Wear (or bring) workout clothes and athletic shoes - you will be walking/jogging/running on a treadmill. You might wish to bring a towel to dab off any sweat.
The V02Max test is done on a treadmill at a pace/speed that is comfortable for you (10-15 minutes at the most). See below.
Driving directions: Upon turning into the driveway at 1555 Post Rd E, Westport CT, drive DOWN the short hill and park in the bottom lot. The parking area by the road / top building is not us. You will see the Sherpa / Longevity entrance on your left as you drive down the short ramp.
What to Expect

The Dexa scan takes 5-7 minutes. You will be asked to lie on the scanning table, remain clothed and keep still. The Dexa scanner (GE Prodigy) is a state-of-the-art medical device that efficiently captures your entire body composition and is one of the lowest x-ray emitting devices. In fact, getting a DXA scan gives you about the same amount of radiation (0.4 uSv) as eating 4 bananas. 0.25 uSv is typical for airport security screening. A round trip flight from New York to LA is roughly 40 uSv.
After the scan, results are available immediately. A report will be printed out for you to take home. A PDF can also be emailed to you. The newly revamped DEXAFITai app is downloadable and will store your data, and subsequent visits, indefinitely showing progression, insights and other valuable information.
Don’t forget to ask about the $99 DEXA-DX add-on to determine and predict your likelihood of CAD and Type-II diabetes disease.

You will be asked to sit in a comfortable position. A well fitting, sterilized mask will be put over your nose and mouth. You will be breathing in fresh air from the room, but the air that you breathe out will go through a tube into the metabolic analyzer to measure your metabolic rate. The goal is to relax and rest! For the most accurate results, we ask that you don’t look at your phone or allow distractions as an ‘at-rest’ state is the objective we’re going for.
After 12-15 minutes, the device will beep, indicating that the test is complete. Results are available immediately via print-out, PDF and the DEXAFITai app.

First, we’ll make sure you are ready to walk/jog or run on a treadmill. You will strap on a Polar heart-rate monitor under your shirt, below the breast plate. A well fitting, sterilized mask is then put over the nose and mouth, connected to the measuring device. We use the state-of-the-art Ultima Series CPX Metabolic Stress Testing system, which provides assessment of functional capacity and cardiorespiratory diagnostics.
You will warm up and decide if you would like the Level 1 (beginner), 2 (intermediate), or 3 (advanced) test. The difference is in the incline and speed of the treadmill. Level 1 is at a walking pace with an increasing incline every 1:30 minutes. Level 2 is at a jogging pace and consistent speed, but an increasing incline every 2:00 minutes. Level 3 increases both speed and incline every 2:30 mins.
The test lasts approx 10-15 minutes … the goal being to test your V02MAX. You will decide when you are done (i.e when MAX effort has been reached and you can no longer continue). Or when the operator notices a peak in your readings and your V02 starts to decline (it is fruitless continuing thereafter as the ‘max’ has been recorded, even if one can continue running). You will then simply step to the side of the treadmill or the operator will turn off the machine, allowing time for a cool down.
We will then analyze your results and print a report. All data is also available via the DEXAFITai app.
See sample reports below or under the Services tab.
